If you have looked at skincare products in a spa, department store beauty counter or even a drugstore, you've probably heard of Hyaluronic Acid. But, what is it? What does it do? And most importantly, do you need it in your skincare routine?
What is it?
Hyaluronic Acid is naturally occurring molecule that hangs out in areas of your body that need extra water.
The molecules are capable of holding up to 1000 times their weight in water!
Here are some examples:
- In your joints for the purpose of lubrication and a protective cushion
- In the deeper layers of your skin for fullness and shock absorption
- In the eyes for plumpness and lubrication
What does is do when applied topically?
In the simplest terms, Hyaluronic Acid will hold water on the surface of the skin. This prevents water from escaping the deeper layers of skin and plumps up the top layers of dead skin cells.
Do you need Hyaluronic Acid in your skincare routine?
First of all, pretty much anyone can benefit from the topical use of H.A, but will it help you reach your skincare goals? Let's look at what skincare benefits you can expect as well as what it will not do.
What CAN it do?
-Smooth and soften skin
-Give the skin a healthy glow
-Plump the surface layer of skin to reduce dehydration fine lines
-Reduce sensitivity by preventing water loss that leads to a damaged barrier function of the
outer layer
-Prevent fine lines, flakey skin and redness by keeping the skin properly hydrated
What it CANNOT do:
-Reduce wrinkles (unless it is injected by a medical professional as a "filler")
-Even skin tone or reduce dark spots
-Absorb deeply into the skin where the natural Hyaluronic Acid is
-Exfoliate the skin (it is not a hydroxy acid like glycolic acid)
Are you still not sure if this ingredient is for you? Feel free to reach out and I'd be happy to discuss your skincare goals!
